Heart of Africa makes an early online debut

WARNING: read this update before proceeding.

Contrary to the claims of the promotional email from Purdie Distribution, Living Scriptures will NOT allow you to download Heart of Africa if you purchase it. “Purchase” seems to mean something different to Living Scriptures than it does to its partners.

If you, like me, were wondering if Heart of Africa would ever show up in a theater near you, early news on its theatrical release was encouraging: the #9 foreign-language film in the U.S.; #1 in Utah where it outperformed Parasite.

And then, coronavirus.

Movie theaters are shutting down and the ones staying open are doing a fraction of their usual business.

Thus, I received this email from their distribution team today (exceprt):

Because cinemas in Utah have temporarily closed their doors, the opportunity of expanding this amazing film of self-discovery, brotherhood, and redemption filmed entirely on location in the Democratic Republic of the Congo into additional markets has been put on hold.

However, there is a silver lining! PURDIE DISTRIBUTION, EXCEL ENTERTAINMENT and LIVING SCRIPTURES joined forces with the filmmakers to make a groundbreaking arrangement happen.

HEART OF AFRICA is now available on-demand at www.livingscriptures.com/heart  – A 24-hour rental will cost $4.99 and a download to own the film is $15.99.

During this unique time in our history when we are looking for creative ways to entertain and uplift our families, consider bringing some warmth and inspiration into your home by experiencing HEART OF AFRICA.

I don’t know if you remember Margaret Blair Young (one of the producers) report on this all-Congolese-made film at last year’s AML conference, but I do—and I’ve been looking forward to seeing it ever since.

I’ll be watching it this weekend. You do too, then send me a brief review either as a comment on this post, email to theric at thmazing.com, or on Twitter @thmazing.

Keep them short and when it’s reached a critical mass, I’ll put together a post of your reactions for the blog.
