Because of the COVID pandemic, an in-person conference with academic papers was not held in 2020.
The Association for Mormon Letters Awards were presented online on May 2, 2020. You can watch the awards ceremony, produced by AML President Eric W. Jepson, and featuring video acceptance speeches from many of the winners, in this Youtube presentation.

R. A. Christmas was presented with the Association for Mormon Letters Lifetime Achievement Award. A panel honoring him, featuring Robert Rees, Clifton Jolley, Tyler Chadwick, Bruce W. Jorgensen, Harlow Clark, and Dennis Clark, was held online on April 30, and is available on Youtube. The award citation, written by Robert Rees and Clifton Jolley, as well as a biographical sketch of Christmas’ career, is available here.
James Arrington was presented with the The Smith-Pettit Foundation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Mormon Letters. A panel honoring him, featuring Mahonri Stewart, Elizabeth Hansen, Marvin Payne, Terry Petrie, and Steven Kapp Perry, was held online on May 1, and is available on Youtube. The award citation, written by Mahonri Stewart, as well as a biographical sketch of Arrington’s career, is available here.

Since the Association for Mormon Letters was born in 1976, we have had, as a foundational purpose, promoting the production and criticism of Mormon literature. We are now two decades into this new millennium, two decades that have introduced new writers, new minds, new trends, new organizations, new surprises, new publishers, new controversies, new ways of being an Association for Mormon Letters. The conference this year will focus on the promotion and criticism of new work, meaning work published over the last twenty years.
While our emphasis this year is on the current, as always, all proposals examining work by, for, or about Latter-day Saints will be considered. While our focus is on the literary, we do accept proposals on other forms of Mormon art.
Proposals on the theme turned in by March 14 will be eligible for early acceptance.
Although we are an academic organization, we welcome proposals both academic and creative. All presentations, panels, readings, workshops, debates, and other means of discussing and showcasing modern Mormon letters are appropriate at the AML conference. (Creative proposals will, we hope, be more creative than “just a reading.”)
Proposals should include the title of the presentation, mention any audio/visual requirements, and be no more than 300 words. Send proposals to conference@associationmormonletters.org by April 1.

Note to students: The AML has a longstanding interest in supporting students (including undergraduates) who wish to present their original work at our conference. We anticipate setting aside time for shorter papers from students, and we hope to provide students with additional feedback prior to the conference in order to help them succeed. The AML has a small budget to assist student scholars who are presenting papers. To inquire, include your interest as part of your proposal.
