Three Kisses in Two Romances: an investigation

.

Marketing my writing has proven my great failure as a capitalist. I pay for Amazon Prime, so overall I’m doing okay preventing Zion, but selling myself? Terrible. Might as well life in a cash-free economy above the Arctic Circle hunting caribou for all the skill I have. At least then, when I starve to death, the wolverines’ll get a free meal out of it.

When talked into saying what Byuck is “about” I’ve tended to go with “it’s a a a romcom about college students.” Which, while not exactly inaccurate, is certainly poor and misleading advertising.

For one thing, if my protagonist knew he were in a book, he would not realize it was a romance. And for another thing, the book’s sole kiss doesn’t involve either of our “romantic” “leads.” And it’s pretty unpleasant. It’s not a grotesque exaggeration to describe it, at least metaphorically, as rapey.

What kind of romance has that as its sole kiss?

And Just Julie’s Fine is possibly worse. At least this novel’s protagonist thinks she’s in a romance (she’s wrong) and at least the book’s two kisses involve her, but….

Yeah. Those are not romantic kisses. The first is at best obnoxious, and the second only succeeds in pointing love away from itself. I don’t think that’s how romance kisses are supposed to work.

Given all that, perhaps we should be startled that this is the (likely) most-reproduced sentence from Byuck:
Don't you know a kiss would change the world forever?
Although Dave is perhaps being a bit ludicrous when he speaks of world-changing kisses, I, Theric, do believe such kisses exist. And thus I’m surprised to realize that, over two novels allegedly focused on the role and importance of romance in human life, I have not written even one of that kind of kiss. And a mere three kisses total.

Anyway. Not sure how this is supposed to convince you to buy Byuck or Just Julie’s Fine….

So what if I just say please?
